Mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineers design the systems that make a building usable. Their models are the densest and change the most, so they need space early, stable references and coordination that respects how systems are designed.
MEP stands for mechanical, electrical and plumbing: the systems that make a building comfortable, safe and usable. MEP engineers design ventilation, heating and cooling, water and drainage, power and lighting, fire alarm and sprinklers, data and security. Their models are the densest on the project and change the most.
An MEP engineer calculates the heat, air, water and power each space needs, sizes the plant and the distribution to match, then routes it through the building. Each round of design changes the sizes, so routes are refined in rounds too.
